Gunnar Sandberg, 16, was hit in the head by a line drive during a practice baseball game on March 11, 2010 fracturing his skull. Initially he was in critical condition and after being placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks he made a miraculous recovery and was released from the hospital seven weeks later. His injury renewed the debate over the safety of metal baseball bats – Gunnar was hit with a ball from a metal bat while pitching. I photographed him at his home in July.
Gunnar shows where the ball struck him.
