I’m honored to have this portrait selected for inclusion in this years American Photography annual .

This photo of Army veteran Dan Berschinski was made in his Stanford apartment in October 2014 for a USA Today veterans affairs special section. The image was not published with the story.

Dan, who lost both his legs and part of his left hand when he stepped on an improvised explosive device just outside Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2009, displays his state-of-the-art prosthetics which have given him a degree of mobility that was once almost impossible. A true warrior spirit in every sense, Dan is one of the most courageous and resilient individuals I’ve ever met.
